The metamorphosis, the cycle of birth, life, death, rebirth, is at the centre of Jan Fabre’s work. Fabre, like an alchemist of olden times, makes death the site of life, and to the space of what has now become inanimate his art, by giving form to the material and the spirit, gives again the breath of life. Fabre’s work in its entirety can be seen as an attempt to attain, from the condition of woe in which we are cast as human beings, the dimension of beauty – it is the attempt of a modern Prometheus to draw light from a condition of darkness.
