ROGIER VAN DER WEYDEN – THE COMPLETE WORKS by Dirk De Vos
The Flemish painter Rogier van der Weyden born in Tournau as Rogier de le Pasture, was one of the most influential artists of the Notherne Renaissance. With his dramatic tableaux and austere, almost sculptural figures, Van der Weyden achieved an unprecedented emotional clarity in both his religious paintings, including his scenes from the Passion of Christ, and his highly refined portraits, among them the famous Portrait of a Lady in the National Gallery of Art, Wahington D.C.
This somptuously illustrated volume is teh first compehensive study of Van der Weyden’s work in twenty-five years. Author Dirk De Vos, who has incorporated all the latest scholarship, illuminates longstanding questions concerning Van der Weyden’s early years and a number of problematic attributions. His careful analysis of Van der Weyden’s style and technique reveals the exceptionally important role played by his workshop; like Robert Campin, his teacher in Tournai, Van der Weyden headed a large studio with a sophisticated division of labor, which made possible the ceation of his largest works. This volume’s catalogue raisonné, which discusses every known painting in details, identifies the input of specific assistants. And for the first time, Van der Weyden’s immense talent as a draftsman is explored in depth.
Reproducing every known painting an ddrawing in full color, and including a wealth of details and comparative works by the artist’s predecessors, assistants, and followers, this book is sure to become the standard reference on Rogier van der Weyden for decades to come.
500 illustrations, including 350 plates in full color.
